Charles went to Washington High School, where he played in the band and ran track. He graduated from there in 1945. After high school, he joined the Merchant Marines, but left that branch of the service after being plagued with severe sea sickness. He then joined the U.S. Army and was stationed in Miami, Florida.
He married Virginia Brune in 1948 and they moved to Rolla, where he attended the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy. After graduation, they moved to St. Louis, where he worked for MacDonnell Douglas, before moving on to Moberly where he worked for Missouri Power and Light. Subsequent promotions sent him to Jefferson City and Saint Louis.
After divorcing from Virginia, he married Brenda McGaughey in 1984.
Charles, also known as Charlie or Brink, enjoyed fishing, hunting, canoeing and camping. He especially liked visiting states in the southwest part of the country.
He died at home on April 5, 1996, after having struggled with heart problems.
